Cove Rangers cannot sign anyone for the rest of the season. The SPFL has handed the Scottish League One club a registration embargo that runs until 31 May 2027, along with a fine, after a tribunal found the club had broken league rules over an unpaid player.

The club says it is considering all of its options, and it is not happy about how hard the penalty has come down.

What the tribunal found

According to the SPFL, Cove admitted failing to make a historic contractual payment to a player when it was due. The club then failed to tell the league it was in default of that rule. That alone would have been a problem, but there was a second finding as well.

The tribunal also decided Cove had given the SPFL incorrect information when it certified that it had no overdue payables to current or former players as at 31 January 2026. The punishment was the embargo plus a fine of 5,000 pounds, of which 2,000 pounds is suspended. The league also confirmed that the club has now paid the player in full.

Cove's response

In its own statement, Cove acknowledged the decision and described the payment at the heart of it as a historic one from 2024, followed by reporting matters. The club said it was disappointed by the severity of the sanctions and is carefully reviewing the ruling.

Whether that review leads to an appeal is not something the club has said. For now, the only wording is that it is looking at every available option.

A tough backdrop on the pitch

The timing is awkward. Paul Hartley's side sit second from bottom in League One, a point above Queen of the South, having collected five points from their first eight matches. A squad that is already struggling now knows it cannot be reinforced through registrations until the end of May 2027.

That makes the next few weeks important in a practical sense. Whatever Cove decide to do about the ruling, Hartley has to work with the players he has, and the table gives him little room to relax.
