Northern Ireland did not just beat Ukraine in Trnava, they took them apart. Michael O'Neill's side won 3-0 in the Nations League, with Ciaron Brown scoring twice and Isaac Price adding a header, and BBC Sport called it one of their best away performances of the O'Neill era.

A start Ukraine never recovered from

The breakthrough came in the ninth minute. Kieran Morrison swung in a corner, Ruairi McConville nodded it back across goal, and Brown, quickest to react, poked it over the line for his first international goal. Northern Ireland were not finished. A flowing move down the left ended with another Morrison cross, and Price met it with a powerful header, his 11th goal for his country.

Ukraine managed little more than long-range efforts before the break. Heorhiy Sudakov and Eduard Sarapiy both tried their luck from distance, and the best chance at the other end after Price's goal fell to captain Trai Hume, whose effort was blocked by Illia Zabarnyi in the final minute of the half.

Brown gets a slice of luck

The third goal arrived in the 61st minute and it was an odd one. Brown flicked on a free-kick, Dmytro Riznyk raced off his line, missed the ball completely, and it trickled into the net. Northern Ireland have had plenty of misfortune in recent years, so nobody was going to complain. McConville, who had another strong game at the back, even had the chance to hammer the ball home on the line and left it for his defensive partner.

Ukraine did try to respond. Mykola Matviyenko and Sudakov had half chances after the restart, and Matviy Ponomarenko's effort was deflected onto the post by Tom Atcheson, but a third clean sheet in the campaign was never really in doubt.

A young side and a bigger picture

The selection told its own story. O'Neill gave 19-year-old winger Morrison, on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Liverpool, his first competitive start, and the starting XI averaged just 22 years old, the youngest Northern Ireland line-up on record since the Second World War. Brown, at 28, was the oldest man on the pitch. Josh Magennis and Paddy McNair, the only two survivors from the famous Euro 2016 win, came off the bench to help see it out, and 18-year-old Ceadach O'Neill won a fourth cap, which ties him to Northern Ireland amid speculation about his future.

The result is Northern Ireland's biggest away win since a 4-1 victory in Lithuania in September 2021. It leaves them top of League B2 with two wins and a draw from three games, three points clear of Hungary and Ukraine. Georgia, who lost 1-0 in Hungary, are bottom on one point and visit Windsor Park on Monday, where an unbeaten window is there for the taking.
