Liverpool had lost five Merseyside derbies in a row at Anfield. That run ended four minutes into Sunday's game, more or less, because from the moment Beata Olsson got in front of Hannah Blundell to glance a corner past Courtney Brosnan, Everton never looked like a team that was going to come back.
It was the fastest goal scored in a Women's Super League derby between the two clubs, which tells you how long Everton spent chasing. Gareth Taylor's side did not simply defend the lead either. They were the better team for most of the afternoon and the 2-0 margin was, if anything, polite.
Everton had one clear chance and put it over the bar
The visitors' best opening of the first half fell to Hannah Cain just after the half-hour, after Liverpool were caught in possession in a dangerous area. Cain lifted the shot over the crossbar. That was it for the opening 45 minutes as far as Everton threats went.
They came out with more ambition after the break and moved the ball forward with more conviction, but the clearer chances kept falling to the home side. Vivien Endemann rattled the crossbar. Natalia Ramos had two good looks at goal, the first blocked by Ruby Mace and the second blazed over. Mace then hooked a Cornelia Kapocs header off the line, and when Everton finally did fashion something through substitute Holly McNamara, Khiara Keating produced a smart save.
Kapocs made sure with four minutes to go
The second arrived with four minutes of normal time left. Kapocs collected the ball in the box, swivelled, and drove a low shot into the corner. Everton had nothing left to give after that, and the Anfield crowd got to enjoy the last few minutes of a derby for the first time in a while.
Natalia Ramos took the player of the match award with a rating of 8.11, which reflects an afternoon in which she was involved in almost everything Liverpool did well, goals aside. Olsson and Kapocs, both Swedish, got the goals and the headlines.
Back-to-back derby wins for the first time in over a decade
This was Liverpool's second consecutive win over Everton, something they had not managed since they took three in a row across 2013 and 2014. The result also lifted them above their neighbours into fifth place in the WSL table.
For Everton the concern is not the result on its own but the pattern of it: a goal conceded from a set piece inside four minutes, one clear chance created in 45 minutes, and a second goal shipped when the game still had time in it. Taylor will be far happier. His Liverpool side turned up, scored early, controlled the middle of the game, and closed it out without drama.
