Ninety-eight games. That is all it took Harry Kane to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, and the old record was not so much broken as buried.

Kane got there from the penalty spot on Friday night, 39 minutes into a 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin that kept Bayern Munich unbeaten in the German top flight. Michael Olise had been hauled down in the box by Tom Rothe. The England captain put the spot-kick into the corner without much ceremony and jogged back for the restart.

Fifteen minutes into the second half he made it 101, heading in an Olise cross that arrived on a plate.

Nobody else is close to Kane's Bundesliga record

Dieter Muller held the previous mark. He needed 129 appearances for Cologne to reach a Bundesliga century. Kane beat that by 31 games, which is roughly an entire league season of football.

Behind Muller on that list sit Bayern legend Gerd Muller (136 games), Lothar Emmerich of Borussia Dortmund (140) and Uwe Seeler at Hamburg (157). Kane arrived in Bavaria in 2023 and now has 152 goals in 154 appearances in all competitions.

Union Berlin, for what it is worth, have now shipped seven goals to him in seven meetings. Only Stuttgart have suffered more, with 10 in seven.

Olise hat-trick caps a strange, brilliant night in Munich

Bayern wore special Oktoberfest kits and played like men who had already been celebrating. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a 20-yard strike after Alphonso Davies did the hard work down the left.

Olise curled in his first two minutes before half-time. Ismael Saibari, the summer signing from PSV, made it five in the 70th with his first Bayern goal. Then Olise finished the job with two in three minutes, rounding Frederik Ronnow for one and striking the pick of the night from distance with his left foot.

Ballon d'Or talk and a contract that is still unsigned

Kane scored 61 goals in 51 games last season. He has six in seven this term. The Ballon d'Or is announced in London on 26 October and it would be strange if his name were not read out near the top of the list.

"I'm very proud to reach 101 Bundesliga goals," Kane told Sky Germany. "In the short time I've been here, I've loved every second of it. When I'm playing with these players I'm going to get chances. To have more goals than games is obviously a great stat to have."

His deal runs out at the end of the season. Talks are happening, without much urgency on either side.

"I'm extremely happy here," he said. "The talks are ongoing and they'll be ongoing for the near future. You can see the way I'm playing and the way I connect with the fans."

Two hundred goals in all competitions for Bayern is well within reach this season. At this rate the only real question is which month it lands in.
