Emily Fox has signed a new contract at Arsenal, and she made it sound like the least complicated decision of her career. The United States defender, who is 28, is understood to have committed for another three years, ending a question that had been sitting quietly in the background since January, when it emerged she had a single season left on her old deal.
"I'm very pleased to be able to continue my journey with Arsenal and it was honestly an easy decision because of where I want to be now, and in a few years' time," she told BBC Sport. "When I think of how I'm going to grow, be challenged and be in an environment where it's like my second home, I think of Arsenal."
Two and a half years, almost a hundred games
Fox arrived from North Carolina Courage in 2024 and started winning almost immediately. The Women's League Cup came in her first season. Then the Women's Champions League in 2025, and the Women's Champions Cup in 2026. She has been picked in the PFA team of the year in each of the last two campaigns and is approaching 100 appearances for the club across all competitions, which for a full-back signed mid-cycle is a lot of football in a short space of time.
Arsenal, for their part, never seemed especially worried. BBC Sport reported the contract situation in January and the club's position then was that she would stay. It turned out to be right.
The medal she has not got
European nights are all very well. The league table is the thing that nags.
"There is definitely some unfinished business," Fox said. "We want to keep going, keep winning and maybe get some things that we've already won before too." A Women's Super League title is the obvious gap in a collection that already includes the biggest prize in the European club game, and she is honest about what comes with the badge. "Being at Arsenal, there's always going to be high expectations from the inside and the outside. That's just part of it. When you have big goals like that, you have to take it game-by-game and you can't look too far ahead."
A busy year ahead with the USA
Club football is only half of it. Fox is also part of Emma Hayes' United States squad, and the schedule between now and the 2027 Women's World Cup is deliberately unforgiving. Spain visit twice in October. Qualification comes in November.
"This year has been great for us in terms of the opponents and the challenges," she said. "I feel like we've played a lot of variety with our opponents and it's given us a taste of different environments, different tactics and layers of how we're going to play. That's ultimately what you need to do when you want to win a World Cup."
Renee Slegers now knows one of the best full-backs in the world is hers until 2029. Given how much movement there has been elsewhere in the WSL this year, that counts for something.
