Sonia Bompastor takes Chelsea to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night, which is a sentence that does a lot of work. She played for Lyon. She ran their academy for eight years. She coached them. Now she goes back with the English club that has won everything at home and nothing in Europe.
She is not pretending the evening is ordinary. "It will be full of emotion; that's obvious," she said, before adding the part every manager adds: "there is a match to be played, and that's the most important thing." Both halves of that are true, and the second one is the one she will be judged on.
The trophy Chelsea keep not winning
Domestically Chelsea have run out of things to collect. The Women's Champions League is the gap in the cabinet, and it has stayed a gap through several managers and several squads that looked, on paper, good enough. Bompastor was hired with that specific problem in mind.
Her description of what it takes is unglamorous. Chelsea, she said, are a club with ambitions, and winning this competition means balancing experienced players with young ones while holding a competitive mentality against the best opponents.
No formula, in other words. Just the observation that European nights punish squads that are only deep in one direction.
Lyon are top and scoring freely
Chelsea arrive on the back of a 1-0 opening win. Lyon arrive having beaten Servette 8-0, which puts them top of the group and says something about the gulf in the pool this season. Head to head, though, the record is closer than Lyon's reputation suggests: they have won two of the four previous meetings between the clubs.
That is the number Bompastor will lean on. Chelsea have played Lyon often enough to know the match is winnable, and losing on matchday two would not be fatal.
Losing it badly, in front of a crowd that knows her, would set a tone she could do without.
Prediction
Lyon at home in Europe remain a serious proposition, and an 8-0 tends to loosen a team up. But Chelsea's away record in this competition is the thing Bompastor was brought in to fix, and she will have set them up to be hard to beat before anything else. A draw feels like the honest call, with Lyon just favoured if the game opens up late.
