Alexander-Arnold's Cross in Prague Leaves Tuchel a Decision

Two minutes after half-time in Prague, Trent Alexander-Arnold answered a question that has followed Thomas Tuchel around for eighteen months. England were stuck against ten men. He collected a broken move, looked up, and bent a right-footed cross over three Czech defenders onto Anthony Gordon's head. One touch, one goal, and a fairly long argument suddenly had evidence in it.

How long he had been waiting

The last time Alexander-Arnold started for England before Tuesday, Lee Carsley was the interim manager, the date was October 2024, and he was playing at left-back in a 3-1 Nations League win in Finland. He scored that night. Since then he has won a Premier League title with Liverpool and moved to Real Madrid, and started nothing for his country.

He was left out of the World Cup squad last summer. That omission looked particularly pointed given right-back has been the position Tuchel cannot settle: Alexander-Arnold became the ninth player used there in the German's 24 games in charge when he finally got the nod in Prague. Whatever the head coach's doubts about that role, the message had been that this player was not going to be the fix.

What the numbers said

England were in control and going nowhere. Pavel Sulc had been sent off after 25 minutes for a reckless challenge on Elliot Anderson, and the ten men behind the ball were holding. Only Anderson, with 41, made more passes in the final third than Alexander-Arnold's 32. Only Gordon, with four, created more chances than his three. Before the assist he had already made a 70-yard run upfield trying to give England somewhere to go.

Tuchel sounded pleased afterwards, and also careful. "He did very well. He had an excellent assist. Overall, like everyone, he was professional, top attitude and one decisive action," he told BBC Radio 5 Live, before adding that "we never doubted that he can produce these kinds of assists" and that the deeper second-half position suited him better than the higher first-half one. Which is praise with the defensive question quietly left open, because Czechia never tested it.

Make or break, and a birthday coming

Gordon, who scored the header, was less guarded. "I make that run time and time again and only a certain number of players have that ability, technique and bravery to be willing to make the mistake trying that pass. That's why he's so good and I've been dying to play with him for that reason." Alexander-Arnold kept it simple: "It's been a long time, but I've always believed I can play for England. The manager gave me a chance, now hopefully he is happy with how I played."

He turns 28 on 7 October. England go to Rijeka on Saturday to face Croatia behind closed doors, then host Czechia at Wembley the following Tuesday. If Tuchel starts him again in Croatia it will say something. If he does not, after a performance like that, it will say rather more. Harry Kane's 87th goal in 123 caps sealed the win in Prague, but it was the cross that people were still talking about on Wednesday.

Match and player facts: Czech Republic 0-2 England, Uefa Nations League, Prague, Tuesday 29 September 2026. Gordon opened the scoring two minutes into the second half from an Alexander-Arnold cross; Kane added the second. Pavel Sulc was sent off on 25 minutes. Alexander-Arnold, 27, is a Real Madrid right-back and turns 28 on 7 October. His previous England start came in October 2024 under interim boss Lee Carsley. England play Croatia in Rijeka on Saturday and Czechia at Wembley next Tuesday.
