Leeds United are closing in on a club-record signing, with a deal for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford understood to be worth at least £40 million plus add-ons. Sky Sports News understands the proposed move is edging closer, and would shatter the Yorkshire club's previous transfer record set when they signed Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim for around £35.5m in January 2023.
The fee would also represent a record amount paid for an English goalkeeper. The 23-year-old Trafford spent last season at City, making 17 appearances and keeping eight clean sheets — a solid return for a young stopper learning his trade behind a world-class squad.
Finding a reliable number one has been a priority for Leeds head coach Daniel Farke all summer. The Elland Road club have been left short after a series of goalkeeping departures. Trafford has been on Leeds' radar for some time. After developing through the City academy, he spent time on loan at various clubs before getting his opportunity in the first team last season. He impressed enough to earn recognition from the England setup and is seen as a long-term option between the sticks.
