Man Utd's Midfield Mission: Tyler Adams, Mateus Fernandes and the Post-Casemiro Rebuild
With Casemiro's departure confirmed and Champions League football secured, Manchester United are ready to begin rebuilding their midfield in earnest. Manager Michael Carrick and sporting director Dan Ashworth have identified the position as the most pressing area for improvement, and a shortlist of targets has already been assembled. The names on it — Tyler Adams, Mateus Fernandes, Alex Scott — reflect a clear philosophy: United want younger, more dynamic options to replace the security Casemiro provided at the base of midfield.
Tyler Adams is the most prominently linked. The Bournemouth and United States captain, 26, has impressed consistently in the Premier League since joining the Cherries, bringing the kind of tenacity and ball-winning quality that Casemiro delivered in his prime. Bournemouth have set a £45m asking price, which represents strong value given Adams' age, profile and the role he will play for the USA on home soil at the World Cup this summer. United are considered frontrunners, though the competition for his signature is unlikely to be limited to one club.
Fernandes and Scott Also in Frame
Mateus Fernandes of West Ham provides a different option — the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is a rarer profile, a deep-lying creator who can also press and defend. His season at West Ham has been one of the few genuine bright spots in a difficult campaign for the east London club, and United are among several teams who have taken notice. Alex Scott, the Bournemouth academy product who can operate across the midfield, rounds out the group of names United have been actively considering.
The club have also been monitoring Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali — though Tonali's price tag and the competition from other clubs make that a more complex proposition. The window that opened with the Mainoo winner against Liverpool and the Champions League return has given United's recruitment genuine momentum. The question is how quickly they can convert interest into signings.
