Hull City are going to the Premier League. A goal from Liam Rosenior's side in the first half of the Championship play-off final at Wembley was enough to beat Middlesbrough 1-0 and secure promotion to the top flight for the first time since 2017. The goal came from a set piece — a left-side delivery that found its way to Ryan Longman at the back post — and it proved to be the difference on a tense afternoon that neither side dominated. Hull held firm across ninety-plus minutes and they will now prepare for life back in the Premier League after three years of building under the Turkish ownership group that took over in 2023.

The Goal That Changed Everything

Longman's close-range finish in the 38th minute owed much to the meticulous preparation Hull's coaching staff had put into their set-piece routines throughout the season. The movement across the face of the six-yard box had been rehearsed, the runs were timed, and the delivery from Lewie Coyle found the right man at exactly the right moment. Middlesbrough knew it was coming — they had conceded from set pieces seventeen times in the Championship this season — and yet they could not stop it. Once Hull had the lead, their defensive shape was excellent. Centre backs Sean McLoughlin and Jacob Greaves gave Middlesbrough nothing to work with in the air, and their goalkeeper Matt Ingram made one excellent save in the final ten minutes to ensure the scoreline held.

Rosenior's Patient Build

This promotion is the product of a long process. Liam Rosenior was appointed in December 2022 when Hull were deep in trouble in the Championship and has since constructed a side with clear identity and genuine team spirit. He has recruited cleverly in a division where other clubs spend far more, building a squad of hungry players with points to prove. The philosophy has always been possession-based and aggressive in transition — and that approach was on full display at Wembley. Rosenior, still only 39, becomes one of the youngest managers in Premier League history to take a club up through the play-offs. His composure on the touchline throughout the afternoon suggested he understood exactly the scale of what had been achieved.

What the Premier League Holds

Hull's first priority in the summer will be retaining the core of the squad that won promotion. Several players will attract interest — Longman and Fabio Carvalho, on loan from Liverpool, are the obvious names — and the financial gap between the Championship and Premier League will make it possible to offer improved terms to those they wish to keep. The club will also need to add quality. Three or four Premier League-calibre signings in positions of weakness will be essential if Hull are to compete for survival, rather than simply arrive in the top flight and hope for the best. The ownership has demonstrated a willingness to invest, and Rosenior has shown he knows what kind of player fits his system.
