Chelsea are heading to the FA Cup final. Enzo Fernández's first-half header proved to be the difference as the Blues edged out a spirited Leeds United side 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday — setting up a mouth-watering all-Premier League final against Manchester City on 17 May.

It was a goal that captured everything Fernández has come to represent at Chelsea — arriving at the right moment, with purpose and precision. The Argentine midfielder, who joined the club in January 2023 for a British record fee, timed his run perfectly to meet a cross and glance a header beyond the goalkeeper. For Leeds, who had been pressing hard for a way back into the game during the second half, it was a cruel afternoon at Wembley, but Chelsea held firm and saw the tie through.

The context adds even more intrigue to Chelsea's passage. They go into the final under interim boss Calum McFarlane, who took charge of the team following the sacking of Liam Rosenior earlier in the week. McFarlane, who had taken the side on an interim basis during a brief spell in January, was thrust back into the spotlight at the worst possible moment — but managed to navigate one of the most high-pressure fixtures in English football without the luxury of a full pre-match build-up in normal circumstances.

McFarlane was careful with his words in the buildup, refusing to be drawn on what went wrong under Rosenior and keeping his focus entirely on the game. "What's happened in the past doesn't need to be spoken about," he said beforehand, and he appeared to get that message across to the players. Chelsea delivered a composed and disciplined performance, defending their narrow lead through a difficult second period when Leeds were pushing hard.

For Leeds, it is a painful afternoon to digest. The club had not reached an FA Cup semi-final since 1987, and their run to Wembley had captured the imagination of their supporters and the wider football world. They fought hard, pressed Chelsea throughout the second half, and created moments of danger — but the goal never came. Their dream of a first FA Cup final in decades will have to wait.

Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro both featured for Chelsea after their fitness scares, and the team showed a level of resilience that will give whoever takes over as permanent manager something to build on. The FA Cup final on May 17 against Man City is now the focal point for Chelsea's season — a chance to end a difficult campaign with a trophy and give the club a boost heading into the summer.

Man City, who came through their own semi-final earlier in the day with a comeback win over Southampton, will fancy their chances against a Chelsea side still in transition. But cup finals are rarely straightforward, and with the Blues showing genuine spirit under a new temporary regime, it promises to be a fascinating occasion at Wembley.
