Stoke City complete signing of Man City's James Grant

STOKE CITY SIGN MAN CITY GOALKEEPER TRUE GRANT ON THREE-YEAR DEAL

Grant, an England Under-19 international, has been on the books of City’s academy for several years and was a regular fixture in their Elite Development Squad. His progress saw him included in Champions League matchday squads two seasons ago, highlighting the faith Pep Guardiola’s staff had in his potential.

The young keeper already has valuable senior experience under his belt after spending last season on loan with Buxton in the National League North. During his time there, he made 36 appearances and earned plaudits for his composure, shot-stopping ability, and maturity beyond his years.

Football runs in the family for Grant, whose father, Lee, is a familiar name to Potters supporters. The former goalkeeper enjoyed a respected playing career with Stoke and later returned as a coach, making this move a particularly sentimental one for the club and its fanbase.

Stoke sporting director Jonathan Walters praised the acquisition, describing Grant as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in the country:
"True has shown real quality with Manchester City and proved himself further during his loan at Buxton. We believe he has the attributes to go on and enjoy a very successful career, and he’ll be part of a strong, competitive goalkeeping department here."

Head of goalkeeping Darren Behcet was also influential in the deal, ensuring Grant joins a unit that already includes Viktor Johansson, Jack Bonham, and Frank Fielding, with Tommy Simkin continuing to gain valuable experience out on loan.

Walters also acknowledged the family connection, adding:
"His dad, Lee, was not only a highly respected figure here as a player, but also a fantastic person. We’re excited to see True carve out his own legacy at Stoke."

While the Potters have not disclosed whether a fee was involved in the deal, the long-term contract underlines their commitment to Grant’s development.

For Stoke, the signing represents both a nod to the club’s history and an investment in its future. For True Grant, it’s a chance to follow in his father’s footsteps while establishing himself in the senior game at a club with ambition.
