Plymouth sign defender Ross on three-year deal

MATHIAS ROSS JOINS PLYMOUTH ON THREE-YEAR DEAL

Plymouth Argyle have strengthened their backline with the signing of Danish centre-back Mathias Ross, who has committed to a three-year contract with the Championship club. The move adds further depth and competition to Tom Cleverley’s defensive unit as Argyle continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.

Ross, 24, arrives from Turkish giants Galatasaray, where first-team opportunities proved limited. Despite spending three years on the club’s books, he made just two senior appearances. To gain experience, the Dane was loaned out to Sparta Prague last season, where he impressed with regular minutes and even gained valuable exposure in the Champions League group stages. Before that, he had a spell in the Dutch Eredivisie with NEC Nijmegen, further adding to his experience across European leagues.

A former Danish youth international, Ross has long been regarded as a player with strong technical and physical qualities. At 6ft 3in, he provides presence at the heart of defence, while his grounding in both Danish and European football has helped shape him into a versatile defender comfortable in different systems.

Manager Tom Cleverley expressed his delight at landing Ross, who becomes Argyle’s 12th addition of the summer window.

“Mathias is a signing we’re really excited about. For someone still only 24, he has already played at a high level across multiple countries. His pedigree and experience will complement our current options, while also giving us the chance to build something longer term. He’s hungry to prove himself in English football, and that’s exactly the sort of mentality we want in this squad.”

Ross will wear the number two shirt for Argyle and is expected to integrate quickly with the team once his work permit, EFL approval and international clearance are completed.

The defender himself expressed enthusiasm about the challenge ahead, calling the Championship a “fantastic opportunity to test myself in one of the toughest leagues in the world.”

With Argyle continuing to show ambition in the transfer market, Ross’s arrival signals their intent to compete strongly this season. His addition follows a series of signings aimed at balancing youth potential with proven European experience, ensuring Cleverley’s side has the depth needed to navigate a long and demanding campaign.
