LIGUE 1 COUP: MARSEILLE LAND AUBAMEYANG ON 3-YEAR CONTRACT IN MAJOR SUMMER SIGNING
Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang, 36, has sealed a sensational return to Olympique de Marseille, agreeing on a three‑year deal that brings the Gabonese striker back to Ligue 1 until summer 2028.
Aubameyang, who became a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Saudi club Al‑Qadsiah, opted to return to Marseille despite receiving lucrative offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and MLS. Instead, he prioritized Europe and the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League with the French side.
Arriving at Marignane Airport on July 30, Aubameyang received a hero’s welcome from Marseille supporters, who greeted him with scarves and chants. He expressed his excitement upon landing, declaring: “I’m emotional… we’re going to smash it this year. I can’t wait to be back at the Orange Vélodrome!”
This move marks Aubameyang’s second spell with the club, which he originally joined in 2023 after leaving Chelsea. In that successful season, he scored 30 goals and was UEFA Europa League top scorer. Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Champions League under Roberto De Zerbi’s guidance.
Aubameyang brings a proven goal-scoring record, pace, and leadership to Marseille’s frontline. Last season at Al‑Qadsiah he netted 21 goals in 36 appearances, underlining his enduring quality at the top level.
His veteran presence is expected to be a cornerstone of De Zerbi’s plans, as Marseille aim to compete on multiple fronts: domestic title pursuit and European competition. The club has already added striking reinforcements this summer—but Aubameyang's arrival is seen as a marquee boost to their ambitions.
