Jurriën Timber will not be heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands and Arsenal defender has officially been ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover in time from a persistent groin problem, the Dutch Football Association confirmed on June 8. It is a crushing blow, not just for Timber personally, but for a Netherlands side that had genuine ambitions of going deep in a tournament being played across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The injury that ended his tournament before it began

The groin issue has haunted Timber since the March international break. He managed to return to action for Arsenal in the Champions League final, where the Gunners were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain, but the lingering nature of the problem meant sustained tournament football was simply not realistic. The Netherlands medical staff assessed his condition and determined that asking him to perform at the required level for a full World Cup campaign would not be medically responsible. Rather than risk a complete breakdown, the decision was made to send him home from the team's pre-tournament camp in New York.

A familiar heartbreak for the Arsenal man

This is, sadly, not new territory for the 24-year-old. Timber missed Euro 2024 in Germany while he worked his way back from a serious cruciate ligament injury sustained in his debut Premier League appearance for Arsenal back in 2023. Just as he had fully re-established himself as one of Europe's most reliable and technically gifted defenders, another major tournament has slipped away from him through no fault of his own. Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was on standby, has been called up as his replacement.

What it means for Netherlands and for Arsenal

For the Netherlands, losing Timber removes a player capable of operating at full-back or across the centre of the defence with genuine composure on the ball. Manager Ronald Koeman will have to reorganise his back line ahead of their opening group fixture. For Arsenal supporters, however, there is a silver lining: the hope is that Timber returns from international break with the rest of the summer ahead of him to recover fully, going into the new season without the physical debt that tournament football extracts. A World Cup is enormous. So, in a different way, is arriving for pre-season fit and sharp.

Match facts: Jurriën Timber, 24, Netherlands international. Current club: Arsenal FC. Timber joined Arsenal in 2023 from Ajax for a reported £34 million. His contract runs until 2028. The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, hosted across the USA, Canada and Mexico.
