England went into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with one of their most talented squads in decades. Thomas Tuchel was supposed to be the tactical mastermind who finally turned potential into silverware. So far, the Three Lions look anything but champions-in-waiting. A 0-0 draw with Ghana and a missed penalty from Harry Kane have left major questions unanswered.
The Midfield Problem Nobody Saw Coming
With Declan Rice asked to do the work of two players, England's midfield has looked unbalanced and short of ideas. Rice cannot be the lone creative force, the defensive anchor, and the decision-maker all at once. Tuchel has not found the right combination. The Ghana game was the starkest example, where England barely tested the goalkeeper before Kane blazed the penalty over the bar.
Kane: The Weight Is Too Heavy
Harry Kane remains England's best hope and their biggest burden. The Bayern Munich striker carries the attacking load almost entirely on his own. When he misses — as he did against Ghana — there is no safety net. Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka must step up and share that responsibility.
Tuchel's Tactical Dilemma
Tuchel arrived with an enormous club reputation but international management is different. You cannot drill tactical ideas week after week. England have shown a system that lacks the instinctive understanding that only comes from playing together regularly. The attacking shape remains confused. Tuchel needs to find solutions fast.
Time Is Running Out
England have enough quality to go far. Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Gordon — on their day they can hurt any defence in the world. But on their day is not good enough at a tournament of this magnitude. Tuchel needs to unlock this squad now. The 2026 World Cup waits for no one — not even England.
