Welcome back! Donacien returns to Chesterfield after Ipswich spell

CHESTERFIELD RE-SIGN FORMER IPSWICH DEFENDER JANOI DONACIEN

Chesterfield have made a significant move to strengthen their promotion ambitions, securing the return of experienced defender Janoi Donacien on a contract until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old joins the National League leaders as a free agent following his recent departure from Championship side Ipswich Town. The signing marks a reunion with manager Paul Cook, under whom Donacien previously played during a successful loan spell at the club in the 2015/16 season.

The move is a clear statement of intent from the Spireites, who are aiming to secure a long-awaited return to the English Football League. Donacien’s arrival adds valuable experience, depth, and a winning mentality to a squad already enjoying a commanding lead at the top of the table.

Manager Paul Cook expressed his delight at bringing a familiar face back to the SMH Group Stadium. "We're absolutely thrilled to get Janoi on board," Cook said. "He's a player I know very well, and he brings with him a fantastic pedigree from his time at Ipswich, including a promotion to the Championship. His professionalism, versatility, and character will be invaluable assets as we head into the most important part of the season."

Donacien, a St. Lucian international, arrives with considerable experience, having made over 100 appearances for Ipswich Town. He was a popular figure at Portman Road and a key member of the squad that achieved promotion from League One last season. Primarily a right-back, he is also comfortable operating in central defence, offering Cook crucial tactical flexibility for the demanding run-in.

Speaking about his return, Donacien said, "It feels great to be back. I have fantastic memories of my first spell here with the fans and the gaffer. You can see the momentum and feel-good factor around the club, and I'm determined to contribute everything I have to help get this team over the line and back into the Football League where it belongs."

Donacien is expected to be available for selection for Chesterfield's upcoming fixtures, pending the completion of all regulatory approvals. His signing will provide immediate competition for places and adds another layer of defensive solidity that could prove vital in the club's quest for the title.
