FROM CONTROVERSY TO ETIHAD? CITY CONSIDER FRESH PAQUETA MOVE AFTER BETTING ALLEGATIONS DISMISSED
Manchester City are once again pursuing a move for Lucas Paquetá, following the resolution of a months-long investigation into alleged spot-fixing. The West Ham United midfielder has now been cleared of any wrongdoing, removing the key obstacle that previously halted a proposed transfer to the Etihad Stadium.
City had been closely monitoring Paquetá since early 2023 and even reached an advanced stage in negotiations last summer. However, the deal collapsed after betting allegations emerged involving the player, prompting the FA to launch a formal investigation. With that process now complete and no charges brought against him, City have resumed discussions over a potential transfer.
Pep Guardiola remains a long-time admirer of the Brazilian international’s technical quality, versatility, and creativity in midfield. Paquetá’s ability to play as an advanced No. 8 or drifting in off the left makes him an ideal fit for City’s fluid system—especially as the club looks to evolve following the departures of Ilkay Gündogan and potential exits of other midfield options.
West Ham are understood to be open to selling the 27-year-old if their valuation—believed to be around £70–80 million—is met. Paquetá has a release clause in his contract, which becomes active in 2025, but City could look to finalize a deal before then to avoid competition.
For Paquetá, the move would represent a significant career step, offering regular Champions League football and the chance to compete for domestic and European titles under Guardiola. The player is said to be enthusiastic about the opportunity and has remained focused on his football throughout the investigation.
With the legal matter now behind him, and City’s interest firmly back on the table, Lucas Paquetá’s future looks poised for a major move. Talks are expected to progress swiftly, with the potential for the deal to be completed before the Premier League season begins.
