Homecoming king? Aubameyang plotting sensational return to old stomping ground

AUBAMEYANG'S SURPRISE COMEBACK: FORMER CLUB EYE FREE TRANSFER FOR GABON STAR

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be on the verge of a return to Ligue 1, with talks progressing between the veteran striker and his former club Marseille ahead of a potential free transfer this summer.

The 36-year-old Gabon international is set to become a free agent after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah, opening the door for a move back to France.

Marseille are currently in discussions over the financial structure of a proposed two-year contract and are optimistic about bringing Aubameyang back to the Stade Vélodrome, where he previously spent time early in his career on loan.

The forward joined Al-Qadsiah last summer in a high-profile move but failed to settle in Saudi Arabia’s top flight, and both parties agreed to part ways amicably after just one season. His availability on a free has sparked interest across Europe, but Marseille appear to be leading the race, driven by the player’s familiarity with the club and Ligue 1.

Aubameyang is said to be open to the move, with the appeal of returning to a competitive European league and possibly featuring in continental football once again. His experience, goal-scoring pedigree, and leadership could be valuable additions to a Marseille side undergoing a squad refresh ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The deal is expected to progress quickly, with Marseille aiming to finalize terms before the squad reports for pre-season. Should the agreement be completed, it would mark a full-circle moment for Aubameyang, returning to the French top flight more than a decade after his breakthrough seasons with Saint-Étienne.
