Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd: Martinez Red Card Deepens Carrick's Misery

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, and the afternoon turned on two minutes in the second half. Lisandro Martinez collected a second yellow card in the 63rd minute, and Cole Palmer scored the resulting penalty in the 64th. The visitors' second-half slump adds to Michael Carrick's misery.

A first half full of near misses

It was goalless at half-time, but it was not dull. Both sides had goals ruled out in an end-to-end first half. BBC reporter Simon Stone wrote at Stamford Bridge that United were playing well, had created chances and thought they were ahead, and that the thing they could not afford to do was get disheartened. For a manager under pressure, it was the right sort of start.

Carrick sent out Senne Lammens in goal, with Diogo Dalot, Martinez, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro across the back, and Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo in the attacking places. Chelsea had Cole Palmer, Estevao and Pedro Neto in front of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Rogers breaks the deadlock, then Martinez goes

The game opened up early in the second half. Lavia provided the assist and Rogers scored in the 50th minute to put Chelsea ahead. Thirteen minutes later United's afternoon got far harder. Martinez was shown a second yellow card in the 63rd minute and sent off, and Palmer stepped up and scored the penalty in the 64th to make it 2-0.

From there United were down to ten men and two goals behind. Estevao thought he had a third for Chelsea, but it was ruled out. Late on, Mbeumo hit the woodwork with a shot that Ally McCoist, summing up for TNT Sports, said he met absolutely perfectly. It was a rare moment of danger for the visitors and it did not change the result.

What it means for Carrick

The BBC's own blog asked the obvious question, whether Carrick's time is up at United, and pointed out that it was a Halloween to forget for him. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, argued the blame should not land on him this time. He said it is easier to replace a manager than a whole team, that clubs usually end up changing the manager, but that this one was not on Carrick, since a senior player being sent off was crazy.

That is a fair point about the red card. It does not remove the larger problem, which is that United showed enough in the first half to feel hopeful, got nothing from it, and then fell away once the numbers changed. They now go into the rest of the weekend with the questions about the manager louder than before.
