Newcastle United have moved swiftly to address their goalkeeping vacancy left by the departure of their first-choice stopper by completing the signing of Czech Republic international Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese club SC Braga for a fee of £25.7 million.
The 24-year-old arrives at St James' Park with a growing reputation across European football after several standout seasons in Portugal. Hornicek joined Braga from Czech side FC Zbrojovka Brno back in 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the most reliable and technically progressive goalkeepers in Liga Portugal, earning consistent recognition for both his shot-stopping and his composure under pressure.
For Newcastle, the signing represents a considered and well-researched piece of transfer business. The club's recruitment department has been tracking Hornicek for over a year, with scouts watching him in multiple matches before recommending the move to the club's football director. Given the significant upheaval Newcastle are navigating this summer — losing key figures from their squad — the addition of a goalkeeper of Hornicek's calibre provides genuine stability in a position that can often destabilise a team when not filled correctly.
Standing at 6'3", Hornicek commands his area with authority and is particularly strong when it comes to organising his defence. His distribution has improved considerably during his time at Braga, where manager Artur Jorge encouraged him to play an active role in building from the back — a quality that will serve him well under Eddie Howe's possession-oriented system at Newcastle.
The Czech Republic international has earned widespread praise within the national team setup as well, becoming the undisputed number one for his country at international level and impressing in qualifying campaigns. That international pedigree gave Newcastle further confidence in the signing, as Hornicek has demonstrated he can handle expectation on the big stage.
Braga, who have a strong recent history of producing and selling talent at a profit, will be content with the sale. They brought Hornicek in relatively cheaply and have now seen him move to one of England's elite clubs — a further testament to the quality of their player development structure.
Hornicek is expected to fly to Newcastle imminently to complete his medical and be formally unveiled as the club's new number one goalkeeper. His arrival will come as welcome news to Toon fans who were beginning to worry about the lack of movement in that position given the summer's departures elsewhere in the squad.
