REAL MADRID AND PSG RACE TO SIGN CHELSEA YOUNGSTER JOSH ACHEAMPONG, CAPITALIZING ON BLUES' FINANCIAL CONCERNS
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to battle for the acquisition of Chelsea's promising young defender, Josh Acheampong.
The 18-year-old right-back, who has been a standout in Chelsea's academy, made a notable impression last season by making his professional debut. He came on as a substitute during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in May, marking a significant milestone in his career. Acheampong, a player highly regarded within the club, was anticipated to make a move to the first team for the 2024-25 season. However, Chelsea is considering selling him to meet the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules, which are designed to ensure financial stability and fair play. Additionally, the club is looking to trim their squad, which currently numbers 44 players.
According to reports from The Independent, both Real Madrid and PSG have expressed strong interest in Acheampong and are prepared to offer as much as €15 million (£12 million/$16 million) to secure his services. Acheampong's versatility has been a major factor in attracting the attention of these European giants. While he primarily plays as a right-back, he also has the capability to perform as a central defender, showcasing a level of flexibility that has impressed scouts from both clubs.
Acheampong's journey with Chelsea began at the age of eight, and he has steadily risen through the ranks of the club's youth system. His potential was further recognized when he made his debut for the England Under-16 team in 2022, and he has since represented England at the Under-17 and Under-18 levels as well. His development and performances have positioned him as a valuable prospect for top European teams.
Chelsea, under the management of Enzo Maresca, will conclude their pre-season campaign with a final friendly match against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Following this, they will kick off their new Premier League season with a challenging fixture against reigning champions Manchester City on August 18.
